Review Published in Circulation: Cardiovascular Imaging
We are pleased to highlight the publication of "How to Image Myocarditis" in Circulation: Cardiovascular Imaging, one of the leading journals in cardiovascular imaging.
The review was led by members of our faculty, Dr. Jan Gröschel and Prof. Jeanette Schulz-Menger, Scientific Director of the Circle Institute and was co-authored by a specialist in Myocarditis Prof. Bettina Heidecker. All authors also contributed to the 2025 ESC Guidelines on Myocarditis and Pericarditis, ensuring that the review reflects the latest evidence and current clinical recommendations.
Why is this important?
Myocarditis presents with a broad spectrum of clinical manifestations, ranging from chest pain and dyspnoea to arrhythmias and heart failure. Early diagnosis is essential for appropriate patient management.
The review provides practical guidance on the optimal use of modern cardiovascular imaging, with particular emphasis on the role of cardiovascular magnetic resonance (CMR).
Topics include:
- Detection of myocardial inflammation and oedema
- Advanced tissue characterization
- Native T1 and T2 mapping techniques
- Assessment of myocardial fibrosis and scar
- The contribution of CMR to diagnosis, prognosis, and therapeutic decision-making
